Insulation for Canberra Homes

An R6.0 Earthwool Ceiling insulation batt is over 27cm thick, and when installed snuggly between the ceiling joists, provides a superior level of thermal protection all year round. Some people prefer to double up with an extra layer of thermal insulation, laid as a blanket perpendicular to the ceiling joists. This effectively eliminates practically all thermal bridging, with the only downside being that it becomes more tricky to walk around in the ceiling area afterwards (if you do venture up in the ceiling space afterwards, it’s recommended to bring some crawling boards with you, to minimise the risk of putting a foot straight through the ceiling).

For the external walls you’ll want at least an R-Value of R2.0, wall insulation, which in most brands is 90mm thick and will fit inside a standard wall stud frame. For optimal results we recommend upgrading to R2.5 thermal and acoustic insulation.

Underfloor Insulation for Homes

If your home has a raised underfloor and if you find your feet are freezing each time the chilly season approaches, then you can be almost certain that the underlying cause is the absence of thermal insulation between the floor joists. Surviving in an otherwise properly insulated house without underfloor insulation is like dressing up in your warmest clothes and then walking barefoot down a cold foot path. Underfloor insulation works just like wall and ceiling insulation – it restricts the transfer of heat, with the result that as the air temperature inside the home warms up (thanks to the fireplace or heating appliances) your floor boards will also gradually warm up. An R-rating of R2.0 or R2.5 is usually more than sufficient for under the floors, as most

We sell mainly two types of bulk thermal underfloor insulation, and the installation method is slightly different. Glasswool insulation is generally pushed up directly between the floor joists, and strapped underneath to ensure it remains in place for the life of the home. Polyester underfloor insulation is often stapled to the timber joists to hold it in place, with similar effect. However before you search insulation batts Canberra and proceed to order, you’ll need to check the level of access underneath the house. Houses which are constructed on a steep slope or in flood risk areas will often have plenty of room to crawl or even walk under. In fact you will even find homes where part of the underfloor are beyond reach from underneath the house, and a ladder or work platform will be required. More common however is the lack of access due to the floor being too close to the ground. Contact us for advice if you’re planning on installing the underfloor insulation yourself.
