Knauf sells them as Knauf Insulation Acoustic batts and lists these sizes for metal-frame walls. We stock two densities, 11 kg/m³ and 14 kg/m³, each in 50 mm and 75 mm, all 600 mm wide. They are made from glass wool bonded with ECOSE Technology, a plant-based binder with no added formaldehyde. How much the batts improve a particular wall depends on the overall construction and on the insulation chosen. Where a specific level of acoustic performance is required, BRANZ advises having it evaluated by an acoustic consultant.

BRANZ did not assess the acoustic performance of these batts (Appraisal 873), and the Knauf datasheet gives no sound absorption or Rw figures for them.

Thermal performance

Knauf's datasheet gives estimated R-values: R1.2 and R1.8 for 11 kg/m³ at 50 and 75 mm, and R1.3 and R1.9 for 14 kg/m³. These batts have not been tested to AS/NZS 4859.1, the standard used to determine insulation R-values, so they do not carry a rated R-value. If the wall also needs a rated R-value, use a batt with a tested R-value, such as Earthwool SoundShield.

Good to know

Non-combustible when tested to AS 1530.1.
