Bradford Anticon Insulation - Light Duty Foil

Bradford Anticon combines two very effective forms of insulation into a single product to provide these benefits. The reflective foil acts as a barrier, which reduces the radiant heat entering the roof space by up to 97% and also controls condensation, while the insulation blanket absorbs outside noise and dramatically slows the transfer of heat into and out of your home.

Why install Anticon Roofing Blanket?

  • Keeps homes and buildings cooler in summer, prevents heat loss in winter
  • Reduces rain noise
  • Provides effective condensation control
  • Reduces overall building energy usage
  • Can be stored externally due to water resistant packaging
  • Can be custom cut to required length to reduce waste and installation time
  • Available in a range of thicknesses to meet the BCA Energy Efficiency Provision
  • Non combustible
  • Made from biosoluble formulation
  • Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
  • Environmentally sound – made from up to 80% recycled content

Residential and Commercial Applications

  • Residential metal clad roofs
  • Commercial and Industrial metal clad and fibre cement roofs eg, offices, shopping centres, warehouses etc
  • Under concrete slabs in carparks

How Anticon works

The below diagrams shows how Anticon works in two different residential applications. The first diagram shows roofing blanket installed in a pitched metal roof with flat ceiling. The second diagram shows roofing blanket installed in a pitched roof with cathedral ceiling below rafters.

Sound Insulation for Roofs

Improve the acoustic performance of your roof with Anticon Insulation.  The installation of Anticon directly under your metal roof sheet can reduce unwanted airborne noise such as aircraft or traffic and also provide a damping effect to reduce impact noise from rain or hail. Although the sound of gentle rain can be soothing, heavy rain or hail on a metal roof can be noisy and annoying. Installing this product reduce the sound power level of heavy rain by over 7%*, improving the comfort of your living environment as well as providing the thermal and condensation benefits that Bradford Anticon is renowned for. The addition of Bradford Gold ceiling batts or SoundScreen can also further improve both the acoustic and thermal performance.

Improve Energy Efficiency and Comfort

Most common building materials such as bricks, roof tiles and metal roofing allow most of the heat they receive to pass through them. This is why insulation such as Anticon for under the metal roof sheet and Gold Batts or New Generation SoundScreen in ceilings and walls is important to achieve improved energy efficiency and a comfortable living environment.

Up to 42% of heat is lost through the roof

In winter, around 42% of a home’s heat is lost through the roof and 24% typically lost through the walls. In summer heat flows at similar rates into the home. The inclusion of this roofing product can help improve the thermal performance and comfort of your home.

Condensation Control

Installing this product can reduce the risk of condensation formation under your metal roof which can cause damage to plasterboard ceilings and mould growth. The use of high levels of insulation on only the ceiling to meet energy efficiency and comfort requirements can unfortunately lead to an increased incidence of condensation formation in roof spaces in cold climates. Although ceiling insulation is very effective at keeping the warmth within the home, it is unable to stop vapour (moisture within the air) from the home passing through the plasterboard and bulk insulation. When this vapour contacts a cold surface such as an un-insulated metal roof sheet, condensation droplets can form beneath the roof sheet in the roof space – similar to the droplets on the outside of a bottle removed from the fridge on a warm day. To help address condensation formation, ‘Anticon’ (the name is derived from the anti-condensation purpose of the product) positioned directly against the underside of the metal roof sheet helps stop the vapour in the air from reaching the cold metal roof sheet. By insulating the metal roof, the temperature of the Anticon foil facing does not get as cold which reduces the risk of condensation forming. For roofs in very cold regions or those homes where moist air enters the roof space, it is important to tape the foil overlap and remove the heavy, moisture laden air from the attic space using a suitable ventilation system.

Fire Performance

This bulk insulation blanket is made from non-combustible fibres and is ideally suited to sealing ember entry points at ridges, valleys and fascias to meet the BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) requirement for metal clad roofs in bushfire areas. Anticon’s bulk insulation blanket achieves a very high fire rating in accordance with AS/NZS1530.3 (0,0,0,1) and the reflective foil facing meets the BCA flammability index requirement of ≤ 5.

Step by step

Summarised from the Bradford Anticon Roofing Blanket Installation Guide, Residential Class 1, Method 1: Vertical roll out over battens (B0225 B_07/2021). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Check before you start
  • Install Anticon dry and keep it dry until the roof is completed, as this is a CSR Bradford warranty condition.
  • Do not start an installation that cannot be completed, and protect the Anticon from getting wet if it is left exposed.
  • Check you have the correct duty strength of RFL for the support spacing, using the Product Selection Guide.
  • Use an appropriate safety harness and footwear and a safe way of getting the Anticon onto the roof.
2Roll out from the ridge
  • Install Anticon with the blanket side up and the RFL facing down.
  • Position the start of the roll nearest the ridge batten with the side lap pointing towards the uninsulated roof area.
  • Roll the Anticon away from the ridge batten towards the fascia or gutter.
  • Use Brad-Fix clips to hold blankets temporarily in position as required.
3Allow the right sag
  • At each batten or rafter crossing, adjust the length and width so the blanket can recover to its advertised thickness below the roof sheet.
  • Allow 60 mm downward sag for Anticon 60 and 80 mm for Anticon 80 between each batten or rafter crossing.
  • Keep the bulk insulation in contact with the metal cladding after the sag allowance.
4Roll out the next blanket
  • Repeat until you reach the end of the roof, then start again from the other side of the roof.
  • Keep the earlier exposed foil lap (at least 150 mm) below the adjacent roll, with the bulk insulation of both rolls abutting and no gaps.
  • In high risk condensation zones or where a vapour control layer is required, use a Class 1 or 2 vapour barrier foil to AS/NZS 4200.1, lapped and taped at all joins, tears and discontinuities.
5Make end and side joins
  • Overlap the end of one blanket and the start of the next by one batten crossing.
  • Trim and peel the bulk insulation from the lower blanket where it crosses the batten, then lay the upper blanket over the exposed facing so the bulk insulation abuts.
  • Give side lap joints a foil overlap of at least 150 mm, or tape them.
6Join at the ridge
  • Extend the Anticon over the ridge to abut the existing Anticon on the other side, with the RFL crossing at least 150 mm over a batten.
  • Peel 150 mm of bulk insulation from the existing blanket, trim it off and lap the RFL edges in a cascading manner with the bulk insulation abutting.
  • Where a specifically designed ridge ventilation is installed, terminate the blanket at the ventilation.
7Trim, seal and clad
  • Install the roof cladding in accordance with the roof manufacturer's instructions.
  • Trim the Anticon flush with the external side of the fascia, and do not let it drape into the gutter, as this will void the product warranty.
  • Seal tears and penetrations with Bradford foil tape (or approved equivalent) applied to the underside of the foil.
  • Do not tape around hot flues, and leave at least 50 mm clearance between the Anticon and any hot surface.

Anticon's RFL is electrically conductive: take care near electrical wiring and light fittings, and consult a qualified electrician if unsure.
