Foilboard® Spacer Blocks

Foilboard Spacer Blocks have been designed to be used with double brick cavity walls to achieve a reflective airspace between the Foilboard® and the masonry. Simply slot the spacer block onto the brick tie to install.

Spacer Blocks for Double Brick Cavity Walls

Foilboard Australia Pty Ltd manufactures a range of fixing accessories tailored to suit many construction applications. These Foilboard blank plate fasteners ensure that the material will be installed correctly and maintain its thermal performance for the life of the application. Whether it is for timber or steel frame construction, underfloor applications and even commercial systems, Foilboard® has the right fixings to suit all applications.

Foilboard Insulation Panel is easy to install during the construction of double brick walls. It is customary to run the inner skin of brickwork up at least 1200mm, push Foilboard Spacer Blocks over the protruding wall ties. Following this, push the Foilboard Insulation Panel over brick ties and up against the spacers, taping holes around ties secures the sheet in position. Tape all joins to restrict the transfer of hot and cold air.

Method of calculating quantities of Foilboard

  • Measure Floor or Wall area.
  • Add 5% to area to allow for cutting and waste, deduct window and door openings.
  • If using 2.44m sheets divide the area by 2.93 to give the number of sheets required.
  • If using 2.70m sheets divide the area by 3.24 to give the number of sheets required.
  • Round up to the next full sheet.
  • Floor saddles should be on joists at approx 600mm centres and spaced at 200mm from sheet ends.
  • For retro-fits Foilboard should span across the underside of joists and between bearers using three fastners per joist. Joins do not need to be made on a joist and you should tape all joins.
  • Generally 1 bag of saddles is required for every 45-50m2 and 1 Role of Green Tape will be required for every 100m2. For retro-fits you will generally require 1 bag of Fastners and 1 roll of Green Tape for every 15-20 sheets, for Aluminium tape you will require one roll for every 10-12 sheets approx. Flexifastners should be used for all sheets 25mm or thicker and you will require 1 bag of 200 fastners for every 15-20 sheets. Or for sheets over 25mm in thickness you can order the plastic plates and supply your own fixing nails or screws. Spacers for brick work you will require 8-10 spacers per m2

Double brick cavity walls

Summarised from the Foilboard Installation Guide, Double Brick Cavity (V0126, January 2026). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Fit the spacer blocks
  • Once the inner brick wall is built, push a Foilboard spacer block onto each brick tie.
2Measure and cut panels
  • Use full sized sheets where possible, starting from the top and working down.
  • For smaller sections, measure the area and cut with a straight edge, using off-cuts to minimise wastage.
3Mark the tie positions
  • Gently press the Foilboard panel onto the brick ties so they leave a mark showing their position.
4Slot over the ties
  • Cut a slot where each brick tie marked the panel.
  • Push the panel onto the brick ties until it meets the spacer blocks.
5Tape the joins
  • Tape any joins, exposed edges or gaps with Foilboard joining tape.
  • Tape around the brick ties as well, for the best thermal performance.
6Finish the outer skin
  • Once the panels are installed, finish the outer skin of the brickwork.

Foilboard panels contain aluminium foil, which conducts electricity, so keep them clear of electrical wiring and refer to AS 3999 or a licensed electrician. Replace, paint or cover any skylight or glass above or beside the panels before installing.

Concrete or blockwork walls, dual airspace

Summarised from the Foilboard Installation Guide, Concrete Wall, Dual Airspace (V0126, January 2026). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Fit clips and spacer blocks
  • Install the furring clips onto the concrete or blockwork wall.
  • Cut Foilboard spacer blocks and fit one to one side of each clip.
2Measure and cut panels
  • Use full sized sheets in the largest areas, working from the top of the wall down.
  • For smaller sections, measure the area and cut with a straight edge, using off-cuts to minimise wastage.
3Mark the clip positions
  • Apply gentle pressure to the panel over the furring clips to leave visible marks.
4Push onto the clips
  • Cut a slot where each furring clip left a mark.
  • Push the panel onto the clips until it meets the spacer blocks.
5Lock in and tape
  • Lock the panels in place with the furring channels.
  • Tape any joins, exposed edges or gaps with Foilboard joining tape.

Garage door

Summarised from the Foilboard Installation Guide, Garage Door (V0126, January 2026). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Prepare the door
  • Insulate the internal face of the garage door.
  • Make sure the surfaces are clean, dry and dust free.
2Fix the spacer blocks
  • Attach Foilboard spacer blocks to the door surface with high temperature, neutral cure silicone.
  • Space them evenly, 5 to 6 blocks per section.
3Measure and cut panels
  • Measure and cut each panel to fit as close to the door framework as possible, using a straight edge and a sharp knife.
4Fit the panels
  • Apply a small amount of adhesive or silicone to the spacer blocks, then slide each cut panel into the frame with the silver side facing out.
  • Position the panels between the lip of the door framework and the spacer blocks, and allow the adhesive to cure.
5Tape the joins
  • Tape any joins, exposed edges or gaps with Foilboard silver joining tape.

Foilboard panels contain aluminium foil, which conducts electricity, so keep them clear of electrical wiring and refer to AS 3999 or a licensed electrician. Replace, paint or cover any skylight or glass above or beside the panels before installing.

Small shed

Summarised from the Foilboard Installation Guide, Shed, Small Structure (V0126, January 2026). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Check the shed suits
  • This method is for small sheds up to 2 m x 2 m without purlins or top hats, where building a frame for mechanical fixings is not feasible.
  • Keep the air gap unventilated, with no wind tunnelling between the Foilboard and the shed sheeting.
2Measure and cut panels
  • Measure the area to be insulated and use full sized sheets where possible.
  • Cut smaller sections with a straight edge for precision.
3Fix the spacer blocks
  • Clean the shed walls and roof so they are dry and dust free.
  • Attach Foilboard spacer blocks to the metal with a high temperature, neutral cure silicone, following the silicone maker's instructions.
4Mount the panels
  • Mount the panels onto the spacer blocks with more high temperature, neutral cure silicone, silver side facing out.
5Tape the joins
  • Tape any joins, exposed edges or gaps with Foilboard joining tape.
  • Do not install under a skylight.

Foilboard panels contain aluminium foil, which conducts electricity, so keep them clear of electrical wiring and refer to AS 3999 or a licensed electrician. Replace, paint or cover any skylight or glass above or beside the panels before installing.
