MetecnoTherm is an Australian made rigid insulation board from Metecno. A fire-retardant PIR (polyisocyanurate) foam core is bonded between two flexible facings, which gives a high R-value for its thickness. Use it in walls and ceilings of commercial and residential buildings, in sheds and fit-outs, and anywhere there is little room for insulation.

Sizes and R-values

Each sheet is 1200 x 2400mm and covers 2.88m². The R-values are Metecno's declared values at 23°C, to AS/NZS 4859.1:2018 and AS/NZS 4859.2:2018.

Fire performance

MetecnoTherm is a Group 2 material to AS 5637.1:2015. Warringtonfire tested 100mm board with embossed foil facings in a full-scale room test to AS ISO 9705 (certificate RTF230123, March 2024). The group number is how the NCC rates wall and ceiling linings for fire.

Early fire hazard indices to AS/NZS 1530.3: ignitability 0, spread of flame 0, heat evolved 0, smoke 1.

Other properties

  • Facings: embossed foil, paper or coated glass fibre
  • Compressive strength above 100 kPa
  • Zero ozone depletion potential, CFC free
  • Made by Metecno in Acacia Ridge (QLD) and Campbellfield (VIC)

In Victoria it is sold per sheet. In Queensland it is sold by the full pallet only; the table shows how many sheets a pallet holds. Need another length? Call us on 1300 729 639.

Direct to concrete

Summarised from the MetecnoTherm Design & Install Guide (v5, August 2024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Keep the boards dry
  • Store the boards off the ground, slightly inclined, with nothing stacked on top.
  • The boards must be dry before fixing, jointing and finishing.
2Choose the fixing pattern
  • Pick 5, 6, 10 or 11 fixings per board from Table 1 in the guide, based on the ULS wind pressure, the board thickness and the pull-out capacity of the fasteners.
  • Contact Metecno for higher pressures or any other deviation.
3Use 60 mm fastener heads
  • Use insulation fasteners with a head or washer of at least 60 mm diameter.
  • Check the fastener maker's specifications for length, pull-out capacity and installation.
4Fix in the set positions
  • Place the fixings at the spacings and edge distances in Figure 1.1 of the guide.
  • Joints can be aligned or staggered. Do not press the boards hard against each other.
5Tape and seal the joints
  • Tape the joints with insulation tape where the project specification calls for it.
  • Seal the joints and the perimeter where needed, to stop air flow and limit moisture getting in.
6Fit tightly around services
  • Fit the boards tightly around penetrations and fire collars to reduce thermal bridging.
  • Fill the gaps in a suitable way where flues, electrical cables or equipment could overheat.

The boards are not trafficable and cannot carry storage or ceiling services. When cutting with power tools, ventilate the area and wear an approved dust mask (AS/NZS 1715), safety glasses (AS/NZS 1337) and hearing protection. Install with consideration of AS 3999.

On battens

Summarised from the MetecnoTherm Design & Install Guide (v5, August 2024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Keep the boards dry
  • Store the boards off the ground, slightly inclined, with nothing stacked on top.
  • The boards must be dry before fixing, jointing and finishing.
2Fix the battens
  • Use battens where the surface is uneven or services are in the way.
  • Fix suitable metal battens or 50 x 25 mm timber battens at 600 mm centres: three rows, at both edges and the centre of each board, as the batten maker recommends.
3Screw or nail the boards
  • Metal battens: screws at no more than 300 mm centres.
  • Timber battens: screws or nails at no more than 200 mm centres.
  • Keep the rows of fixings less than 600 mm apart.
4Check the design load
  • This pattern is for a design load on the board of up to 0.375 kPa.
  • Greater wind loads may need extra fixings: contact Metecno for advice.
5Fit tightly around services
  • Fit the boards tightly around penetrations and fire collars to reduce thermal bridging.
  • Fill the gaps in a suitable way where flues, electrical cables or equipment could overheat.

The boards are not trafficable and cannot carry storage or ceiling services. When cutting with power tools, ventilate the area and wear an approved dust mask (AS/NZS 1715), safety glasses (AS/NZS 1337) and hearing protection. Install with consideration of AS 3999.
