Tips for Handling Large Insulation Bags
If you don’t have the luxury of a forklift on hand when receiving your delivery of insulation, then you or someone else will probably be unloading it by hand. Providing you are reasonably fit, this should not be overly difficult. Apply the correct technique, and you’ll save time as well as your back. Typically, insulation comes in either single bags, and these bags are often combined into compressed packs or “bales” of 4 or 5 bags. One bag will typically weigh between 8 and 18kg, and a bale of Earthwool can weigh in excess of 70kg. Single bags are relatively easy to either lift or drag, but a bulky bale requires more attention to technique.
Avoid dragging or lifting the bale, but rather unload it so that it lands standing in an upright position. This should not be too difficult if you have the assistance of a second person, for example the driver of the delivery vehicle. With the bale now on the ground, stand as close to it as possible and push it forward, using your body weight to assist. Roll it forward, and walk after the bale, pushing as you go, keeping the bale as vertical as possible. Should this still prove too difficult, use a sharp knife to carefully split open the bale, and move the bags one by one.
How to Order Online
Measure your home to work out how many m2 of insulation you need. You can calculate this from the house plans or with a tape measure.
The final step is to install the insulation! You can do this yourself or hire a professional. Check out our DIY videos here.
