  • Combined thermal break, vapour barrier and reflective insulation in one
  • Designed for wall insulation
  • Covers 30 m² per pack
  • Needs an adjacent air gap to work, so it is not a stand-alone bulk insulator and gives less R than batts.

Tile roofs

Summarised from the Ametalin ThermalLiner Installation Guide (APM-45737-0, 2024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Face the blue side out
  • Install in compliance with AS 4200.2:2017 with the blue anti-glare side facing out.
2Drape below the battens
  • Under tiles, install it below the roof battens with a drape of no more than 40 mm.
  • Unroll it across the roof trusses, parallel to the fascia, and drain it into the gutter via an anti-ponding device.
3Overlap or tape the joints
  • Overlap joints by at least 150 mm untaped, or by at least 50 mm and taped on the exterior face.
  • Position all end joints over supporting members.
4Lap for drainage
  • Where it acts as a water control membrane, make sure the slope is at least 2° so it drains, with upper sheets lapped over lower sheets.
  • Terminations at penetrations, valleys, fascia and barges must comply with AS 4200.2:2017 and drain to the building flashings.
5Clear hot flues
  • Cut the membrane back from any hot flue with a clear space of at least 50 mm.
  • Seal the edge with fire rated Ametalin Reinforced Insulation/Ducting Tape or a fire rated collar, or as the flue manufacturer recommends and the local authority approves.
6Seal and repair
  • Where it acts as an air or vapour barrier, tape and seal all overlapped joins, penetrations and discontinuities with Ametalin Reinforced Insulation/Ducting Tape.
  • Repair any holes or tears made during installation.

Install in accordance with AS 4200.2:2017. Foil insulation conducts electricity, so follow the risk assessment and hazard control measures in federal, state and territory WHS legislation before you start.

Metal roofs

Summarised from the Ametalin ThermalLiner Installation Guide (APM-45737-0, 2024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Face the blue side out
  • Install in compliance with AS 4200.2:2017 with the blue anti-glare side facing out.
2Fit under the battens
  • Under metal roofing, the preferred installation is under the battens, parallel to the fascia.
  • It can go above the battens, but performance may be reduced and condensation may pool behind the battens or form where the product touches the roofing.
3Pull taut over steel purlins
  • On steel purlin construction, pull the product taut with an equal amount on each consecutive run, to allow for sagging from wider spans and high temperatures close to the metal roofing.
  • This matters most where the install temperature is below 20°C.
4Overlap or tape the joints
  • Overlap joints by at least 150 mm untaped, or by at least 50 mm and taped on the exterior face.
  • Position all end joints over supporting members.
5Lap for drainage
  • Where it acts as a water control membrane, make sure the slope is at least 2° so it drains, with upper sheets lapped over lower sheets.
  • Terminations at penetrations, valleys, fascia and barges must comply with AS 4200.2:2017 and drain to the building flashings.
6Clear hot flues
  • Cut the membrane back from any hot flue with a clear space of at least 50 mm.
  • Seal the edge with fire rated Ametalin Reinforced Insulation/Ducting Tape or a fire rated collar, or as the flue manufacturer recommends and the local authority approves.
7Seal and repair
  • Where it acts as an air or vapour barrier, tape and seal all overlapped joins, penetrations and discontinuities with Ametalin Reinforced Insulation/Ducting Tape.
  • Repair any holes or tears made during installation.

Install in accordance with AS 4200.2:2017. Foil insulation conducts electricity, so follow the risk assessment and hazard control measures in federal, state and territory WHS legislation before you start.

Framed walls

Summarised from the Ametalin ThermalLiner Installation Guide (APM-45737-0, 2024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Check your climate zone
  • For ABCB Climate Zones 1 to 3 the guide lists timber and steel framed construction, brick veneer, reverse brick veneer and lightweight cladding, direct to stud or on battens.
  • It is not suitable for Class 1 buildings in ABCB Climate Zones 4 to 8. Shed roofs and walls are listed for Climate Zones 1 to 8.
2Hang plate to plate
  • Install in compliance with AS 4200.2:2017 with the blue anti-glare side facing out.
  • Extend the membrane from the top plate to the bottom plate on concrete slabs, or from the top plate to the bearers in timber construction.
  • Stagger any vertical overlaps.
3Lap or butt the joints
  • Lap joints by at least 150 mm untaped, or by at least 50 mm and taped.
  • Butt-join and tape instead where the combined thickness could get in the way of the cladding or the reflective air gap.
  • Fix all end laps at a stud so the membrane is continuous.
4Fix before cladding
  • On timber frames, fix with Ametalin Cap Nails, galvanised clouts or staples at no more than 150 mm centres.
  • On steel frames, run Ametalin Double Sided Insulation Fixing Tape along all framing members and secure with capped tek screws at the top of each horizontal run, at least every second stud.
  • Do all fixing before the cladding goes on.
5Keep the air gap
  • Where it acts as a thermal control membrane, keep an air gap of at least 20 mm to the low emittance side.
6Lap for drainage
  • Where it acts as a water control membrane, lap upper sheets over lower sheets so water sheds to the outside face, and seal or turn up all penetrations.
  • Cut window and door openings neatly and fit them properly at the flashing points.
7Seal and repair
  • Where it acts as a vapour or air barrier, tape and seal all overlapped joins, penetrations and discontinuities with Ametalin Reinforced Insulation/Ducting Tape.
  • Repair any holes or tears made during installation.

Install in accordance with AS 4200.2:2017. Foil insulation conducts electricity, so follow the risk assessment and hazard control measures in federal, state and territory WHS legislation before you start.

Double brick walls

Summarised from the Ametalin ThermalLiner Installation Guide (APM-45737-0, 2024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Check your climate zone
  • It is not suitable for Class 1 buildings in ABCB Climate Zones 4 to 8, so check the climate zone of the building first.
2Fit cavity spacers
  • After the outer leaf of the double brick or masonry cavity wall is laid, place cavity spacers onto the brick ties.
  • Use one cavity spacer per square metre to keep the required air space.
3Slit at the brick ties
  • Install the membrane horizontally with the blue anti-glare side facing out.
  • Cut slits through it at all brick tie positions and place it over the brick ties.
4Push against the outer leaf
  • Push the membrane and the cavity spacer into position against the outer leaf of bricks.
  • Then continue laying the inner leaf of brick or masonry.
5Keep mortar off the foil
  • Do not let mortar contaminate the reflective surfaces.
  • Aluminium foil must not touch wet concrete or mortar, as it is susceptible to alkali corrosion.
6Lap the joints
  • Lap joints by at least 150 mm untaped, or by at least 50 mm and taped.

Install in accordance with AS 4200.2:2017. Foil insulation conducts electricity, so follow the risk assessment and hazard control measures in federal, state and territory WHS legislation before you start.
