pro clima SOLITEX MENTO® PLUS is a roof weather resistive barrier (WRB), laid as a sarking membrane under tile, metal and slate roofs. It protects the roof and building envelope from the weather during construction, while internal moisture escapes through its vapour permeable, non-porous TEEE layer. The TEEE film is laminated between two layers of spun bonded polypropylene and reinforced with a polypropylene scrim.

Where to use it

  • Tile, metal and slate roofs. It has a medium duty classification to AS 4200.1; pro clima refers to AS 4200.2 for installation.
  • Roof pitch: pro clima does not recommend installing SOLITEX MENTO under 5° roof pitch, as this can result in ponding.
  • Rafter spacing: no more than 1 m.
  • Bushfire-prone areas: suitable for BAL regions up to and including BAL FZ in accordance with AS 3959.
  • This is a roof membrane. Where the roof meets a wall, the application guide laps the wall WRB, SOLITEX EXTASANA, 150 mm onto SOLITEX MENTO and tapes the joint with TESCON EXTORA.

Performance

  • Vapour control: Class 4, vapour permeable (AS 4200.1). Vapour permeance 1.429 µg/N·s (ASTM E96 Method B).
  • Water control: water barrier (AS 4200.1), more than 2,500 mm (EN ISO 811).
  • Air control: air barrier (AS 4200.1), air permeability below 0.055 m³/(m²·h·50 Pa) (EN 12114).
  • Fire: flammability index below 5 (AS 1530.2). pro clima states the membrane is deemed non-combustible because it is less than 1 mm thick and has a flammability index below 5 (NCC 2025 Vol 1 C2D10(6)(f) and Vol 2 H3D2(1)(f)).
  • Withstands temperatures up to 100 °C and down to -40 °C behind external claddings.
  • Thickness 0.60 mm, surface weight 175 g/m², tensile strength 10.1 / 7.1 kN/m (machine / lateral direction).

Sizes we sell

  • 50 m x 1.50 m roll: 75 m², 13 kg.
  • 50 m x 3.00 m roll: 150 m², 26 kg.
  • SOLITEX MENTO PLUS connect, 50 m x 1.50 m roll: 75 m², 13 kg. It has an integrated adhesive connection strip for faster installation; its data sheet lists the same technical values as the standard roll.

Installation notes

  • Designed to withstand up to 180 days of UV exposure before cladding. The application guide allows its use as a temporary roof cover for up to 180 days when TESCON NAIDECK seals the fixings. Detail the roof cladding so that no direct sunlight reaches the membrane in service.
  • Lay it horizontally, parallel to the eave, taut and with the printed side facing the installer. Overlap each layer by 150 mm along the printed white line.
  • How the laps are sealed depends on the roof pitch (above 15°, 10° to 15°, 5° to 10°). Counter battens must be at least 20 mm high for drainage and ventilation.
  • Install to AS 4200.2-2017 or the pro clima method. The Installation tab has the full steps.

Good to know

  • Meets the requirements of AS 4200.1 and is suitable for use in Australia.
  • Electrically non-conductive.
  • Keep the membrane away from grinding sparks.

Roofs

Summarised from the SOLITEX MENTO Application Guide (AUS, 11.06.2021). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Prepare the roof framing
  • Make sure all rafters or trusses are aligned and free from splinters.
  • Mark where the top edge of the membrane will go so there is enough overlap for the eave detail you have designed.
2Fix the first layer
  • Pull the top edge taut and staple within the overlap zone, so fewer staple holes are exposed to water run-off.
  • After fixing two points along the top edge, pull the membrane down taut at the centre and fix it with 2 to 3 staples, then fix each bottom corner with 2 to 3 staples.
3Fit the counter battens
  • Fix counter battens to hold the first layer, finishing them 50 mm short of the overlap line so they do not get in the way of the joint.
  • Use counter battens at least 20 mm high for drainage and ventilation; 45 mm battens give extra summer heat removal.
4Overlap the next layer
  • Overlap each layer by 150 mm, using the printed white line as a guide.
  • Keep membranes away from grinding sparks.
5Seal joints by pitch
  • Above 15°, apply at least TESCON EXTORA 60 mm to the horizontal joints with 30 mm onto each side and press it with the PRESSFIX tool.
  • From 10° to 15°, join the overlap with DUPLEX placed 5 to 10 mm from the overlap line, then tape over it with TESCON EXTORA.
  • From 5° to 10°, lay the membrane over solid sheathing, place the top layer onto a bead of about 5 mm ORCON CLASSIC and seal the overlap with TESCON EXTORA 60 mm.
6Seal fixings on low pitches
  • At pitches of 10° or less, fit TESCON NAIDECK between the counter battens and the membrane.
  • Screw fix the counter battens so the TESCON NAIDECK is compressed and seals around the fixings.
7Tape exposed staples
  • Seal any staples that are not hidden under an overlap with a patch of TESCON EXTORA.

The guide states SOLITEX MENTO 5000, PLUS and ULTRA can be installed according to AS 4200.2-2017 or as per the pro clima installation method in the guide.
