James Hardie Fire Rockwool Insulation

James Hardiefire Insulation is a type of mineral wool fire protection insulation designed for use in James HardieSmart Blade and Aged Care wall systems. This product also contributes to the thermal and acoustic performance of the building. James Hardie Insulation is available in 60mm and 85mm thickness and different widths to suit to different applications.

Storing and Handling Hardie Fire Insulation

HardieFire insulation should be stored in an internal dry area, out of direct sunlight and not exposed to chemicals. James Hardie products must not be installed during an electrical storm and must be installed in a dry state to a dry surface and protected from weather during transport and storage. HardieFire™ insulation has not been designed to withstand prolonged direct exposure to the exterior elements. Ensure that the insulation is completely dry prior to installation.

How to Install James Hardie Insulation

When placing HardieFire™ insulation inside the wall stud bays, ensure a minimum 5mm compression along sides is maintained. If cutting is required, please allow 5mm in addition to the required dimension to achieve above compression. Keep exposure to a minimum and minimise quantities kept in work areas. Avoid contact with eyes. When handling and installing Hardiefire™ insulation, to prevent irritation ensure to wear:
  • Safety goggles/glasses conforming to AS/NZS 1336,
  • Protective clothing such as gloves and long sleeve shirts and trousers,
  • P1 or P2 respirators.

How to Cut HardieFire Insulation

It is recommended to cut outdoors. If cutting indoors, please ensure that workspace is properly ventilated or HEPA vacuums/dust extractors are used.
  1. Position cutting station so wind will blow dust away from the user or others in working area.
  2. Use a mechanical hand saw or reciprocating saw to cut James Hardie batts

Product Warranty

James Hardiefire has a 10-year manufacturing warranty when used with HardieSmart Systems.

Denser batts (higher kg/m³) hold more mass, so they absorb more sound and cut noise transfer between rooms better. NRC rates that absorption from 0 to 1.

Step by step

Summarised from the James Hardie HardieFire Insulation, Technical Data Sheet (Australia, February 2017). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Prepare the work space
  • Turn the mains power off before entering the work space; if in doubt, consult a licensed electrician.
  • Have defective electrical cables, terminals or other wiring repaired by the relevant specialist before installation. Electric cables and equipment partly or completely surrounded by bulk insulation may overheat and fail (see AS 3999 and AS 3000).
  • Make sure the work space is well ventilated; in confined spaces a HEPA vacuum or other suitable dust extractor is recommended.
  • Complete a risk assessment of the work space first, covering electrical hazards, site access and ventilation.
2Keep the batts dry
  • Store HardieFire insulation in an internal dry area, out of direct sunlight and not exposed to chemicals.
  • Do not install it during an electrical storm. Install it dry, to a dry surface, and protect it from the weather during transport and storage.
  • HardieFire insulation is not designed to withstand prolonged direct exposure to the exterior elements; make sure it is completely dry before installation.
3Cut 5 mm oversize
  • Where cutting is needed, allow 5 mm on top of the required dimension so the batt is compressed in the stud bay.
  • Cut outdoors if you can. Indoors, make sure the work space is properly ventilated or use HEPA vacuums or dust extractors.
  • Position the cutting station so the wind blows dust away from you and others in the work area.
  • Use a reciprocating saw or a mechanical hand saw, depending on the cutting rate needed.
4Fit the batts with side compression
  • When placing HardieFire insulation in the wall stud bays, keep a minimum of 5 mm compression along the sides.
  • Follow the current design guide of the HardieSmart wall system you are building for the installation details and suitability.
5Dispose of offcuts
  • Discard waste pieces in line with your local council guidelines, in a way that prevents exposure and escape of the material.

The data sheet refers to the HardieSmart system design guides (also on this page) for installation and suitability in each wall system.
