Trade Select® VapourTech Brane VHP is a Very High Permeance (VHP), vapour permeable wall wrap made by Ametalin, with a Light Wall duty rating. Its triple-layer construction has two tough outer layers of spun-bonded fabric protecting an inner core of VHP membrane. It is classified as a Water Barrier and a Class 4 Vapour Permeable membrane: water vapour diffuses through the core so condensation risk is controlled, while outside liquid water cannot penetrate inwards.

Where to use it

  • As a wall wrap behind most types of cladding, in wall systems in ABCB Climate Zones 2 to 8, in residential and commercial buildings.
  • Not recommended in ABCB Climate Zone 1. Ametalin points to its Class 1 and 2 vapour barrier products there.
  • Brick veneer: Ametalin says it can be used, but names Sarking xR Micro-perforated as the preferred membrane for brick veneer outside the humid tropics.
  • Not for roofing applications.
  • Ametalin describes it as chemically non-reactive, such as in corrosive conditions close to coastlines.
  • Bushfire-prone areas: complies with AS 3959-2018 for use in all BALs. Ametalin advises seeking independent advice on the choice of sarking in the BAL design.

Performance

  • Vapour control: Class 4 Vapour Permeable, vapour permeance 12.848 µg/N·s (ASTM E96).
  • Water control: Water Barrier (AS/NZS 4201.4:1994).
  • Air control: Ametalin states it is not classified as an air barrier under AS 4200.1. Where an air barrier is required, a different membrane has to be specified.
  • Fire: flammability index low, 5 or less (AS 1530.2-1993).
  • Not reflective: emittance 0.9 on both faces. Electrically non-conductive.
  • Nominal thickness 0.38 mm, burst strength 254 N.

Sizes we sell

  • 1370 mm x 30 m roll: 41.1 m².
  • 1500 mm x 30 m roll: 45 m².
  • 2740 mm x 30 m roll: 82.2 m². Ametalin notes the 2.74 m roll halves installation time and reduces the number of air gaps and joins in the wall.

Installation notes

  • UV resistance: up to 60 days, so plan the cladding within that time.
  • Install in accordance with AS 4200.2:2017 Pliable Building Membranes and Underlays, Part 2: Installation.
  • Behind non-absorbent claddings such as steel, provide adequate drainage for any trapped moisture. Where direct fix cladding reduces drainage and drying, Ametalin recommends an external drainage cavity.
  • Do not install it in direct contact with LOSP, organic solvent or oil based treated timbers.
  • With high tannin timber claddings such as Blackbutt, Blackwood, Ironbark, Jarrah, Merbau and Spotted Gum, avoid direct to stud fixing: use a drainage cavity, with the cladding on non-reactive battens.
  • Use silicone-based sealants; do not use sealants that contain solvents or oils.

Good to know

  • Tested and classified to AS/NZS 4200.1. Used as part of a compliant building system and installed to AS/NZS 4200.2 and the NCC, it can satisfy the relevant requirements for pliable building membranes and sarking-type materials.
  • Store undercover in a clean, dry place in the pack provided, out of contact with alkaline products, cement and mortar.
  • Durability may be affected by chemical and airborne pollutants if used in industrial or farm buildings.

Step by step

Summarised from the Ametalin Wall Wrap Installation Guide video (Ametalin, 2020), shown above. Watch it for every detail.

1Choose how to fix it
  • Fix the wrap with staples, or with a roller double-sided fixing tape applied to the studs first.
  • With fixing tape, anchor the wrap at the corners with staples and stick it down as you go.
2Start with the bottom run
  • Start with the bottom horizontal run and tack the leading edge into place.
  • Roll it out and tack every second stud or so.
  • Once the run is complete, go back and secure it to all studs.
3Lap the next run over the lower one
  • Place the next run over the lower run, on the outside, so the wrap forms a drainage plane.
  • Overlap the runs by 150 mm if you are not taping the lap, or 50 mm if you intend to tape it.
  • Tack it along the wall, then go back and staple it on every stud.
4Make end laps over a stud
  • End laps should be 150 mm and fall over a stud, so the install is continuous and strong.
5Add cap nails in high wind areas
  • In a high wind area, finish off with metal cap nails every 300 mm.

The data sheet specifies installation to AS 4200.2:2017.
