  • Insulation and vapour barrier in one, made for sheds
  • Australian-made
  • Needs an adjacent air gap to work, so it is not a stand-alone bulk insulator and gives less R than batts.

Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 is a 5 mm reflective shed insulation for roofs and walls. It has a closed-cell foam core with an anti-glare foil face on one side and a reflective foil face on the other, works as insulation and vapour barrier in one, and is fibre-free. Kingspan designed it for sheds only: it should only be used in Class 10a buildings (non-habitable buildings such as sheds, garages and carports).

Where to use this shed insulation

Kingspan's shed installation instructions cover four situations:

  • New shed roofs: laid across the purlins with a nominal 40 mm sag between them, with the roof sheeting screwed through it.
  • Existing shed roofs: fixed to the purlins with 12 g x 25 mm Tek screws, four across the roll at each purlin.
  • New shed walls: fixed loosely to the outside of the frame, with Kingspan AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits (about 3 per square metre) on the outer face to create an air space before the cladding goes on.
  • Existing shed walls: fixed taut to the inside of the frame or girts with the same screws.

Performance

Reflectance is 97% on the reflective face and 95% on the anti-glare face, with emittance E0.03 and E0.05. Each foil face must sit next to an unventilated air space to work. On new roofs the sag between the purlins leaves that space, and on new walls the Spacer Biscuits create it.

Kingspan does not publish an R-value for Insulshed 50. On its product page it asks shed owners to send their shed details to technical@kingspaninsulation.com.au for more information.

Sizes we sell

  • 1350 mm x 22.25 m (30 m²): nominal roll weight 6.9 kg, diameter 390 mm
  • 1350 mm x 33.33 m (45 m²): nominal roll weight 10.4 kg, diameter 470 mm

How to insulate a shed with Insulshed

  • On new roofs, overlap joins by 50 mm and tape them with 72 mm reinforced foil tape, or overlap 150 mm untaped. Overlap untaped end joins by 600 mm.
  • Fit it neatly around doors, windows and penetrations, and tape where needed to stop air leakage.
  • Leave at least 100 mm clearance around hot flues and light fittings.
  • Foil facings conduct electricity, so avoid contact with un-insulated cables and fittings.

The Installation tab has the full steps for new and existing roofs and walls.

Good to know

  • Flammability index ≤ 5 (low) to AS 1530.2:1993. Kingspan states AIR-CELL is suitable for buildings in Bushfire Attack Levels 12.5 to 40.
  • Water-resistant and unaffected by moisture, and rodent and insect resistant.
  • Heat above 105°C damages it: keep sparks and flame from blow torches, welders and cutting tools away.
  • Wear UV protective sunglasses and sunscreen when installing in direct sunlight.
  • Transport and store rolls in their packaging, clean and dry, standing on end, and away from wet cement or lime.
  • Made in Australia. Kingspan's AIR-CELL warranty covers manufacturing defects for 15 years from installation, provided it is installed by a qualified tradesman to Kingspan's instructions.

1Lay across the purlins
  • Lay Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 perpendicular to the purlins with a 25 mm overlap into the gutter.
2Allow sag between purlins
  • Allow a nominal 40 mm sag between purlins.
  • If mesh is used, install it loosely to allow for this sag.
3Overlap and tape the joins
  • Overlap joins by 50 mm and apply 72 mm reinforced foil tape to the top of the join.
  • Alternatively, allow a 150 mm overlap where joins are not taped.
4Press the tape down
  • Apply pressure to the tape with a plastic squeegee or blade.
  • Overlap end joins by 600 mm if they are not taped.
5Fix the roof sheeting
  • Fix the roof sheeting by screwing through Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 to the purlins.

1Roll out and fix
  • Roll out Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 perpendicular to the purlins.
  • Fix to the purlins with 12 g x 25 mm Tek screws or similar.
2Space the screws
  • Use 4 screws across the width of the roll at each purlin, one 25 mm from each edge and the other two at approximately 430 mm centres.
3Join the rolls
  • For the neatest finish, butt join the rolls and tape the joins with 72 mm reinforced aluminium tape.
  • Alternatively, overlap the rolls by 50 mm and tape them the same way.
4Cut around frames and penetrations
  • Where purlins connect to the frame, cut a slot so the insulation passes over or behind the frame.
  • Cut neatly around penetrations and tape if necessary.
5Reveal the skylights
  • Line beneath skylights as for the roof, then cut down the centre and diagonally to the corners to form flaps.
  • Curl the flaps back under the roof to reveal the skylight and fix them by taping or otherwise.

New shed walls

1Fix loosely to the frame
  • Fix Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 loosely to the outside of the frame, leaving flexibility for it to dish into the wall cavity.
2Cut around openings
  • Cut carefully around doors, windows and other openings so the insulation neatly abuts the frames.
3Butt join and tape
  • Butt join the sheets and tape them with 72 mm wide reinforced foil tape.
4Add the Spacer Biscuits
  • Adhere Kingspan AIR-CELL Spacer Biscuits to the outer face of the insulation to create the outer air space.
  • Allow approximately 3 Spacer Biscuits per square metre, using their peel off self-adhesive backing.
5Install the cladding
  • Install the cladding in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions.

1Fix inside the frame
  • Fix Kingspan AIR-CELL Insulshed 50 taut to the inside of the frame or girts with 12 g x 25 mm Tek screws or similar.
2Space the screws
  • Use 4 screws across the width of the roll at each girt, one 25 mm from the edge and the other two at approximately 430 mm centres.
3Join the rolls
  • For the neatest finish, butt join the rolls, or alternatively overlap them by 50 mm.
  • Tape the joins with 72 mm reinforced aluminium tape.
4Cut around openings and services
  • Cut carefully around windows, doors and other openings so the insulation neatly abuts the frame.
  • Cut penetrations for services neatly to minimise gaps.
