K12 Framing Board For Commercial Use

Kooltherm K12 Framing Board is a fibre-free rigid thermoset phenolic insulation, faced on both sides with foil adhesively bonded to the insulation core during manufacture. This reflective surface improves the thermal resistance of any cavity adjacent to the board. If correctly applied, Kooltherm® products can be expected to have a long life of service. Their durability depends on the supporting structure and the conditions of its use. Kingspan K12 is warranted for a period of 10 years for both residential and commercial installations, subject to the terms of the complete Kingspan Kooltherm® warranty document.

Concrete Wall Installation (Clip/Channel System)

  1. Install chosen furring channel clips at required spacing for plasterboard lining.
  2. Fit Kooltherm over furring channel clips by pushing over the clips to abut the wall, and so that the wings of the clips penetrate the board. Care should be taken to avoid the foil facing of the insulation panels separating from the insulation core by neatly trimming the foil face at the point where the furring channel clip penetrates the insulation.
  3. Butt join boards to provide a continuous insulation layer.
  4. Install furring channels by clipping into channel clips. Furring channels should be tight against the face of the Kingspan Kooltherm®. Where furring channels are not tight to the insulation contact Kingspan Insulation Technical Service for further advice.
  5. Install plasterboard lining.

Taping, Cutting, Packaging, Storage and Handling

It is considered best practice to tape joins of Kingspan Kooltherm® boards in this system with 48 mm wide reinforced aluminium foil tape. When taping a plastic squeegee or blade must be used to apply appropriate pressure to the tape. Surfaces must be dry and free from dust, oil or grease prior to taping. Cutting should be carried out either by using a fine toothed saw, or by scoring with a sharp knife, snapping the board over a straight edge and then cutting the facing on the other side. Ensure accurate trimming to achieve close-butting joints and continuity of insulation. According to quantity, the boards are supplied in packs, labelled and shrink-wrapped in polythene. The packaging of Kingspan Kooltherm® should not be considered adequate for long term outdoor protection. Ideally boards should be stored inside a building. If, however, outdoor storage cannot be avoided then the boards should be stacked clear of the ground and covered with an opaque polythene sheet or weatherproof tarpaulin. Boards that have been allowed to get wet should not be used.

1Install the channel clips
  • Install the chosen furring channel clips at the spacing required for the plasterboard lining.
2Push boards over the clips
  • Push each board over the clips so it abuts the wall and the wings of the clips penetrate the board.
  • Neatly trim the foil facing where a clip penetrates, so the foil does not separate from the core.
3Butt join the boards
  • Butt join the boards to give a continuous insulation layer.
  • Best practice: tape the joins with 48 mm reinforced aluminium foil tape, pressed down with a plastic squeegee or blade on dry, clean surfaces.
4Clip in the furring channels
  • Clip the furring channels into the clips, tight against the face of the boards.
  • Where the channels are not tight to the insulation, contact Kingspan Insulation Technical Service.
5Line with plasterboard
  • Install the plasterboard lining.

1Check the stud spacing
  • Make sure stud spacings do not exceed 600 mm centres.
2Fix boards to the frame
  • Fix the boards to the external surface of the frame with vertical board joints on a vertical member.
  • Lightly butt the boards so the insulation stays continuous.
3Hold them temporarily
  • Use large headed galvanised clout nails or screws as temporary fixings until the battens are fitted.
4Fit the battens
  • Fix preservative treated softwood battens vertically through the insulation, coinciding with the studs and the top and bottom plates.
  • Consider the weight of the cladding when choosing the batten fixings and how many to use.
5Fix the cladding
  • Fix the external cladding to the battens in the traditional manner.

  • Attach wall ties to the frame at the spacings required for the masonry outer leaf.
2Fix boards to the frame
  • Fix the boards to the external surface of the frame with vertical joints on a vertical member, lightly butted so the insulation stays continuous.
3Fix and tie the boards
  • Use large headed galvanised clout nails or screws, then tie the boards to the frame with a timber frame wall tie and insulation retaining disc.
  • Make sure fixings coincide with the studs and the top and bottom plates.
4Build the outer leaf
  • Build the masonry outer leaf in the conventional manner, with wall ties holding the two leaves together.
5Keep the cavity clear
  • Keep a residual cavity of at least 25 mm, in line with the moisture provisions of the NCC.
  • Do not let the cavity exceed 75 mm.
