Knauf Earthwool Acoustic Partition Rolls are glasswool acoustic insulation rolls for framed walls, including internal partitions. They are made from glass wool fibres bonded with ECOSE Technology resin, and we sell them in three densities: 11 kg/m³, 14 kg/m³ and 24 kg/m³. More from Knauf Insulation and the Earthwool range.

Sizes we sell

All three densities are supplied as 75 mm thick, 600 mm wide rolls. BRANZ Appraisal 873 lists Knauf's acoustic insulation in this thickness and width at 11, 14 and 24 kg/m³. The area per pack for each density is shown in the specifications.

Acoustic performance

Glasswool absorbs sound: sound energy entering the air pockets between the fibres is converted into heat, so less of it passes through the partition. How much the rolls improve a particular wall depends on the overall construction design and on the acoustic properties of the insulation chosen. Where a specific level of acoustic performance is required, BRANZ advises having it evaluated by an acoustic consultant.

BRANZ did not assess the acoustic performance of these rolls, and Knauf does not publish sound absorption or Rw data for them on its Australian website. If your plans or acoustic report name a density, order that density.

Thermal performance

These acoustic rolls have not been tested to AS/NZS 4859.1, the standard used to determine insulation R-values, so they do not carry an R-value. If the wall also needs a rated R-value, use a batt with a tested R-value, such as Earthwool SoundShield.

Good to know

  • Non-combustible: BRANZ reports that Knauf glasswool insulation, a range that includes these acoustic products, is not deemed combustible when tested to AS 1530.1.
  • Store the packs under cover in dry conditions, with no heavy objects stacked on them and in a position that avoids over-compressing the product.
  • Unpack the rolls and let them re-loft before installing.
  • A dust mask and eye protection are recommended when handling.
  • The glass fibre is certified by EUCEB (European Certification Board for Mineral Wool Products).

Step by step

Summarised from the Knauf Insulation Wall batts and Internal Partition batts, Installation Instructions (KIAU0817597INS [V0.4]). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Plan and order
  • Read these instructions with AS 3999 and all applicable local, state and federal building regulations, and install to AS 3999.
  • Work out the wall area (length x wall height), divide it by the m² marked on each pack and round up to the nearest whole pack, allowing for areas that cannot be insulated.
2Unpack and let it loft
  • Keep the insulation in its packaging until you are in position and ready to install, and check that the product matches the specification.
  • Make sure it has lofted to its nominal thickness; if needed, gently shake or bounce it on its side until it recovers to the thickness on the label.
  • Around wall lights or other heat sources, keep the clearances in the appliance manufacturer's instructions; AS 3999 gives further guidance.
3Fit between the framing
  • Fit the insulation snugly between framing members, avoiding gaps, tucks and folds.
  • Choose a thickness that matches the cavity; where the cavity is deeper than the product, provide adequate support.
  • Fit snugly against the top and bottom wall plates, with the front face flush with the inside face of the framing.
4Fit metal stud walls
  • Install to the relevant building code.
  • Friction fit one side into the metal C-channel and butt the other edge against the metal stud.
  • Cover the full height of the wall.
5Fill the small spaces
  • Use offcuts to insulate small and hard to fit areas.
  • Make sure all areas are insulated, including behind electrical outlets, plumbing and services.
6Check before lining
  • Check that all areas are insulated with an even, consistent layer, and remove all packaging and excess insulation.
  • Before lining, check the insulation has reached its nominal thickness and does not protrude beyond the studs, restrict ventilation cavities or press on the linings.
  • In internal walls where the cavity is filled, make sure the lining keeps full contact with the framing.

Knauf publishes no separate guide for the acoustic roll; its wall and internal partition instructions say walls can be insulated using rolls or batts.
