Pink Partition Wall Insulation for Effective Sound Absorption

Pink Partition insulation is a lightweight, glasswool product specially designed to be free standing for quick installation in steel stud framing. It is used in both multi-residential and commercial steel frame buildings. All products are designed to give assurance of effective sound absorption and to reduce noise transfer between rooms. This product effectively provides solutions to ‘problem’ acoustic applications. Pink® Partition  also provides a range of thermal values making the products suitable for insulating the external walls of a building envelope thereby increasing the comfort levels of building occupants. Pink Partition Acoustic Batts are made locally in Australia by Fletcher Insulation.

Sound: An Important Part of any Environment

It is becoming increasingly appreciated that sound is a significant part of both indoor and outdoor environments. It is not desirable to create 'noise free' environments, and the acceptable level of noise or sound will be influenced by many factors. For example the level of noise which might be welcome in a busy cafe' will usually be far higher than what you'd expect to find in a public library or a commercial office. Similarly, in a medical practice you would expect that the internal walls between adjoining offices would be insulated with a hi-density sound insulation - whereas in a domestic setting, it might be considered acceptable to allow sound transfer between e.g. the living room and the dining room. Acoustic partition insulation helps to resolve the issue of sound transfer where needed.

Step by step

Summarised from the Fletcher Insulation Pink Partition, Installation Guide (IG12, Revision 1, issue date 07082024). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Work out the quantity
  • Measure the area to be insulated and check the centre to centre distance between studs.
  • Choose the density from the project specification; for a set acoustic performance, ask the specifier.
  • Divide the area by the coverage per pack and allow 5% wastage for simple areas, more for complex ones.
2Make the area safe
  • Electric cables and equipment covered with bulk insulation may overheat and fail; refer to AS 3999:2015, Section 2.6.
  • Isolate power at the circuit board where necessary, or ask the site representative to do so, and tag the circuit breakers.
3Cut to size
  • Cut with a sharp knife and straight edge; cutting with power tools is not recommended.
  • Use larger single pieces cut to fit rather than several small offcuts.
4Friction fit into the frame
  • Friction fit the batts into the wall frame with no gaps to the studs or noggings.
  • In metal framing, insert the insulation into the open side of the channel.
  • Make sure the batts do not protrude past the studs and fit snugly, including around water pipes and other rigid obstructions.
  • Butt the edges closely together so there are no gaps at joints.
5Do not compress or over fix
  • Avoid compressing or over fixing the insulation, as this reduces its thermal performance.
6Support and close in
  • The batts generally stay in place before sheeting; if they will be left unsupported for long periods, hold them with stringing such as PVC tape that keeps the plasterboard sitting evenly on the framing.
  • Pink insulation is not designed to withstand weathering, so apply external cladding without delay.

The guide also covers ceiling overlays: friction fit between framing members, butt the edges together and keep the required clearances around light fixtures and penetrations.
