Expol Joist Saddles support and secure Expol underfloor panels in a new floor. Each 60 mm saddle slips over the top of a joist before the flooring goes down, so the panels are laid in from above and sit on the saddles. They suit timber and steel joists, with no straps or staples.

How to use them

  • New floors only: the saddles go on before the floor is laid.
  • Two saddles per panel, at opposite corners. A bag of 50 fixes 25 panels.
  • Fix the saddles first, then lay each panel in from the top, flush on the saddles.
  • For the 60 mm Expol White R1.4 and Expol Black R1.8 panels in standard length.

Insulating under an existing floor? Use Expol Z Clips, which push in from below.

Step by step

Summarised from the EXPOL Underfloor Insulation DIY Step Guide (2026). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Check the clearances
  • Keep 200 mm around metal heating flues, recessed downlights and exhaust fans.
  • Keep 50 mm around brick and concrete chimneys.
2Measure the joists
  • Measure the gap between your joists, and measure a few because they vary.
3Trim the edge
  • If required, slice down the concertina edge, leaving about 5 mm extra for a snug fit.
4Fix the saddles first
  • Fix two EXPOL Joist Saddles for each panel, in opposite corners, before the panel goes in.
5Sleeve the cables
  • Sleeve any cables in EXPOL Wireguard before laying the panels.
  • Never use a staple gun on the Wireguard.
6Lay the panels
  • Lay each panel in from the top, flush on the saddles.
7Work around pipes
  • Notch the panel around pipes with a sharp knife and leave 100 mm clearance.
