Expol Z Clips hold Expol underfloor panels in place under an existing floor. They are tool-free, push-fit brackets: once a panel is in between the joists, you push a clip in from below and it squeezes between the panel and the joist until it locks. No nails, no drilling and no extra fasteners.

Z Clips replace the old Expol nylon L brackets, which Foamex has discontinued.

How to use them

  • Two clips per panel, at opposite corners, each about 200 mm in from the end of the panel.
  • Push the clip in between the panel and the joist until it locks.
  • A bag of 50 fixes 25 panels.
  • For the 60 mm Expol White R1.4 and Expol Black R1.8 panels.

Building a new floor? Expol's install guide uses Expol Joist Saddles there, which go over the joists before the floor is laid.

Step by step

Summarised from the EXPOL Underfloor Insulation DIY Step Guide (2026). Work from the full guide: it has the drawings and every detail. Open the full guide (PDF)

1Check the clearances
  • Keep 200 mm around metal heating flues, recessed downlights and exhaust fans.
  • Keep 50 mm around brick and concrete chimneys.
2Measure the joists
  • Measure the gap between your joists, and measure a few because they vary.
3Trim the edge
  • If required, slice down the concertina edge, leaving about 5 mm extra for a snug fit.
4Sleeve the cables
  • Sleeve any cables in EXPOL Wireguard before fitting the panels.
  • Never use a staple gun on the Wireguard.
5Slide the panel in
  • Push the panel up between the joists, hard against the floor, with no air gap.
6Fit the Z Clips
  • Push-fit two Z Clips into opposite corners of each panel, set 200 mm in.
7Work around pipes
  • Notch the panel around pipes with a sharp knife and leave 100 mm clearance.
