Earthwool SoundShield batts are Knauf Insulation's high-density glasswool wall batts, designed to reduce noise transfer between rooms and between floors while also insulating against heat. This page covers five grades: the R2.0 HD wall batt, R2.5 HD SoundShield, and the SoundShield Plus grades R2.7 SHD, R3.1 HD and R4.0 HD, each in 430 mm and 580 mm widths.

Where to use it

  • Internal walls, to reduce noise between living spaces such as bedrooms, study areas and home theatres.
  • External timber-frame walls, where the batts insulate and absorb noise from outside.
  • Between floors. Knauf's homeowner guide shows its Earthwool wall batts (R2.0 to R4.0) for interior walls, exterior walls and mid-floors.

Knauf's data sheet lists the 430 mm and 580 mm widths for timber frames.

Choosing the right grade

Match the batt to your stud depth. Knauf recommends a batt as thick as the cavity: never squash a batt into a shallower cavity, and support it in a deeper one.

Knauf grade Frame depth Thickness Density
R2.0 HD 75 mm 75 mm 17.3 kg/m³
R2.5 HD SoundShield 90 mm 90 mm 20.1 kg/m³
R2.7 SHD SoundShield Plus 90 mm 90 mm 28.2 kg/m³
R3.1 HD SoundShield Plus 110 mm 110 mm Not published
R4.0 HD SoundShield Plus 140 mm 140 mm 22.5 kg/m³

Densities are from BRANZ Appraisal 873, which does not list the R3.1. HD means high density and SHD super high density. In a 90 mm stud wall the R2.7 SHD is denser than the R2.5 HD (28.2 against 20.1 kg/m³) and has the higher R-value.

Acoustic performance

Glasswool absorbs sound: in the air pockets between the fibres, sound energy is converted into heat, so less of it gets through the wall or floor. Knauf makes SoundShield at a higher density to make the most of this.

Knauf does not publish Rw or NRC figures for these batts in Australia, and BRANZ Appraisal 873 gives none either. The rating of a finished wall or floor depends on the whole construction as well as the insulation, so if your project needs a specific rating, have the system confirmed by your designer or an acoustic consultant.

Installation notes

  • Let the batts recover to their full thickness after opening the pack; shake them gently if needed.
  • Friction-fit them snugly between the studs and plates with no gaps, tucks or folds, flush with the inside face of the frame. Insulate behind outlets, pipes and services.
  • Before lining, check that the batts are at full thickness and do not stick out past the studs.
  • Between floors, the batts can be laid on the ceiling lining between the joists. In other horizontal positions they need support from a suitable durable material.
  • Install to AS 3999 and Knauf's instructions; the Installation tab has the full steps.

Good to know

  • Non-combustible to AS 1530.1. Early fire hazard indices (AS 1530.3): ignitability 0, spread of flame 0, heat evolved 0, smoke developed 2-3.
  • R-values tested to AS/NZS 4859.1 (2018). BRANZ Appraisal 873 (2022, amended January 2023) lists the 75 mm R2.0, 90 mm R2.5, 90 mm R2.7 and 140 mm R4.0 wall batts; the 110 mm R3.1 is not listed.
  • Made with up to 80% recycled glass and ECOSE Technology, a plant-based binder with no added formaldehyde.
  • Store packs dry and under cover, with nothing heavy on top.
