Glasswool Insulation

Glasswool is the most common type of insulation used in residential homes and commercial buildings around the world. It is also referred to as fiberglass insulation. Earthwool Insulation is popular among home owners and builders because it is less itchy than many other types of glass wool insulation.

How Is Glasswool Insulation Made?

Glasswool insulation is often made using recycled glass and sand. There are two types of recycled glass material used; plate glass (which comes from windows and car windscreens) and container glass (which comes from bottles and jars). These ingredients are mixed together and sent to a furnace tank which is gas oxygen fired with an electric boost (environmentally friendly process) and set at a temperature of around 1400oC. A binder is then added which acts as a glue so that it can be formed into rolls or slabs of insulation. The binder used in Knauf Earthwool is an innovative ECOSE® Technology binder which is a bio-based organic formula that has no formaldehyde, colours or dyes added to the process.

Benefits Of Using Glasswool Insulation

The glass fibres in glasswool insulation create millions of tiny air-pockets inside the insulation which traps air between the fine fibers and prevents heat from passing through it. In addition, glass wool insulation is not a great conductor of heat which means that it prevents heat from transferring through the material. This gives glasswool its insulating properties and allows it to maintain stable temperatures within your home, keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer.Installing glasswool insulation is an achievable DIY project with numerous benefits for you and your household including;

• Reducing energy bills
• Outstanding thermal and acoustic performance
• Easy to handle and install with a softer feel – making installation more comfortable
• Fire resistant
• Manufactured from up to 80% recycled glass

Tips for installing Glasswool Insulation

When installing make sure the insulation batt is snuggly fit in the cavity, but make sure it is not compressed otherwise the R-value is compromised. Ensure wires are pulled in front of or behind the insulation batts and make space for power outlets and LED downlights by cutting the insulation. Remember that gaps between insulation batts can allow exposure to air flow, draughts and/or condensation which can reduce the effectiveness of the insulation.
