EXPOL Underfloor Insulation is a rigid expanded polystyrene (EPS) panel that fits between the joists of a timber floor. Each 60 mm panel is rated R1.4 and is concertina cut on both edges, so it compresses for a snug fit between the joists. It can go into new homes before the floor goes down, or be retrofitted under existing floors.

Where to use it

Under suspended timber floors in new and existing houses, fitted between the floor joists. BRANZ Appraisal No. 871 finds it suitable for exposed underfloors without a lining when installed to Expol's instructions, with fixings in wind exposed situations. See all underfloor insulation.

Thermal performance

  • R1.40 at 60 mm (ASTM C518-04, AS 4859.1)
  • Complies with AS/NZS 4859.1
  • BRANZ Appraisal No. 871 (2026) assesses it against NCC 2022 Volume Two, H6P1 and Housing Provisions 13.2.2. More than one layer may be needed to reach the minimum R-value required for your home, which the designer and installer must check.
  • Expol states its insulation performance is not affected by ageing or moisture.

Need a higher R-value?

Expol Black R1.8 is the same 60 mm panel with graphite in the foam: R1.8 vs R1.4 at the same thickness, fitted the same way. It suits colder areas such as the NSW Tablelands, the Southern Highlands and alpine country. Available in NSW and the ACT, in the 410 mm width.

Sizes we sell

Panel (mm) Panels per bag Coverage per bag
1200 x 410 x 60 11 5.41 m²
1200 x 470 x 60 10 5.64 m²
1200 x 560 x 60 9 6.05 m²

Measure the gap between your joists before ordering. Joists vary, so measure a few; a job may need more than one panel width. If a panel is too wide, slice down the concertina edge, leaving it about 5 mm oversize. The nominal length is between 1200 mm and 1240 mm; the widths do not vary.

Installation notes

  • Keep 200 mm clear of metal heating flues, recessed downlights and exhaust fans, and 50 mm clear of brick and concrete chimneys.
  • Fit each panel hard against the underside of the floor so there is no air gap. Fill all gaps and make butt joins tight.
  • PVC cables must not touch the panels. Sleeve them in EXPOL Wireguard, and never use a staple gun.
  • Fix each panel with two Expol fixings at opposite corners: Z Clips for existing floors, Joist Saddles for new floors. A bag of 50 fixes 25 panels.
  • Notch around pipes with a sharp knife and leave 100 mm clearance for maintenance.

The Installation tab has the step by step guide for new and existing floors.

Good to know

  • Combustible: BRANZ classifies it as combustible, for use only where combustible materials are permitted under NCC Volume Two. In bushfire prone areas, NCC Volume Two H7D4 applies. It is made from flame retardant bead, with a Spread of Flame Index of 0 and a Smoke Developed Index of 5 (AS/NZS 1530.3:1999).
  • Store bags under cover, out of sunlight, with nothing heavy stacked on them. Panels can get wet before installation but should be dry when installed; insulation that becomes damp must be removed and the cause fixed.
  • A 50 year limited product warranty from Expol.
  • Non-allergenic and non-irritating. Panels are fully recyclable at a StyroCycle drop off site.
