Kerrie and Spence from The Block create an off-grid home (4 Sheds Project)

Well, former contestants on The Block, Kerrie Charter and Spence Thomson, have just made this vision a reality on 120 acres of land in rural Victoria.

Kerrie and Spence are calling it their ‘forever home’. It’s located in the rural town of Mia Mia, 120 kilometers north of Melbourne in central Victoria. Here’s a picture of the home under construction.

If you’re wondering what the motivation is behind their bold, off-the-grid move, for the reality TV couple it came down to both economic and environmental considerations. ‘We will never get utility bills again, and we’re doing our bit for the environment,’ Kerrie said in a recent Current Affairs interview.

Indeed, the couple are collecting their own rainwater and harvesting power from the sun via roof solar panels and solar inverters that connect to batteries. That way, they can have power even when the sun goes down, not to mention the prospect of saving up to $10,000 per year on utility bills.

Insulation choice

While solar panels, batteries and rainwater tanks are obvious ways to save money and reduce one’s carbon footprint, choice of insulation also plays a crucial and sometimes underappreciated role.
