Climate, as well as the layout and design of your home, are major factors which will help determine the R-Value best suited to your home. The R-Rating represents the thermal resistance of the insulation – a higher R-Rating essentially means a higher performance insulation. The hi-performance Bradford Gold batts are available in R-Values of R5.0 through to R7.0, offering the highest level of thermal protection available in Australia. So does that mean you should go ahead and order the highest R-Value Bradford batts available? Not necessarily. Depending on where you live, the highest possible R-Value may not be the most economical choice.
R-Value and the Law of Diminishing Returns
If you’re starting point is an un-insulated ceiling, then installing even a very low R-Value (e.g. R3.0) would immediately translate into some energy savings and more comfortable indoor temperatures. Upgrading from there to e.g. an R4.1 Ceiling Insulation, would in most areas slightly but increase these aforementioned benefits – but the difference would be less noticeable. Upgrading further to e.g. a Bradford Gold R5.0, R6.0, even R7.0 becomes more a matter of personal preference and more difficult to justify with any real cost-benefit analysis. Broadly speaking, the more extreme the winter cold and the more intense the summer heat – the more economically justifiable will be any upgrade to a high performance Bradford Insulation. Thinking longer term – say 20 or 30 years ahead, it may be economically justified to invest in the highest R-Value available today, especially if you assume that electricity prices are doomed to rise significantly, and even more so if you believe Australia is destined for more extreme weather conditions in the same period. Regardless of which R-Rating you should choose, you’ll be glad to know that Gold Batts come with a 70 year warranty, and will not require any maintenance or replacement for the entire life of your home.
