Acoustic Benefits

One of the most forgotten areas of the home to insulate is between floors. Midfloor insulation can limit the transfer of noise between levels in multi-storey buildings by up to 75%. Children shouting, loud music or even a noisy washing machine can create disturbances to the rest of the household. Acoustic insulation between each level of the house can help to contain noises to designated parts of the home. The acoustic benefits of sound proof insulation means less disturbances and a quieter home to relax in!

Types Of Noise

Airborne Noise – Also referred to as ambient noise and is caused by voices, mobile phones, music playing etc.. Transmitted through the air and then through floors and ceilings in multi-storey buildings. This noise can easily be blocked out with sound proof floor insulation.

Impact Noise – This is caused when something comes into direct contact with a surface. For example, when an object falls on the floor or footsteps made by someone walking or jumping in the level above. The impact in these events create a vibration that travels between floors and ceilings. It is generally harder to soundproof this type of noise; however sound proof floor insulation is a step in the right direction.

Increase Thermal Performance

There are thermal benefits to insulating between floors, especially if most of your time will be spent in either the upper or lower level of the house. Midfloor insulation can help to create climate zones within the home. This means that you can heat or cool downstairs during the day and the bedrooms during the night. By installing insulation between floors, thermal heat loss can be reduced between floors.

Which R-value Should I Install?

The most important thing to consider when buying midfloor insulation is the acoustic properties of the insulation. There are two main options for between floor insulation. The first option is R2.5 (or higher) acoustic wall insulation. The second option is R4.0 or higher ceiling insulation. The R2.5 acoustic wall batts are more dense than ceiling insulation, however R4.0 ceiling batts will provide a similar performance because they are so thick.

If noise is a major concern in your home, then consider installing a double layer of R2.5 acoustic wall batts. These are 90mm thick, so a double layer is around 180mm thick. These batts are very dense and will do a great job at reducing noise between the ground and first floor.

Installation Tips

Midfloor insulation needs to be installed during the construction phase or during a renovation project. Once the plaster has been installed it is too late to add insulation between floors as this area is no longer accessible. Sound insulation is easy to install and is designed to last the lifetime of your home. If you have any questions, please contact us.
